Our up-close and personal interview with the knowledgeable blogger and jewelry influencer Becky Stone of Diamonds in the Library. Part One
What type of personality do you think is beneficial to become an influencer and blogger about jewelry?
I don’t think there’s just one kind of personality that makes success as a jewelry influencer more likely. It helps if you’re a stubborn perfectionist like me, because producing high-quality content on a daily basis takes motivation, but beyond that I think all kinds of people can be successful bloggers.
To succeed in this, you must possess a resilient mindset. When you have hundreds of thousands of followers, you are exposed to hundreds of thousands of opinions about your work. People on the internet aren’t always nice, and you have to be able to shake that off over and over again to keep going.
Did you start your work knowing you wanted to blog, write, and use social media? Or did your work begin some other way and morph into your current role?
I actually became a jewelry blogger by accident. I’ve been a writer my whole life (I was first published in a magazine at the age of 14), but I never expected to go into social media.
Five years ago, I was managing a publication of banking regulations for the federal government, and the creative part of my soul was dying. I wanted a side project that I could get excited about, one that would help me remember that writing could be fun.
I’d already built a bit of a following on Pinterest, where I was tracking down and saving interesting jewelry online. I decided to branch out from there to an actual blog; I didn’t have any career aspirations in this direction at the time; I was just looking for a fun hobby. I was so enamored with it that I decided to quit my day job two years ago, and now I am thoroughly enjoying running Diamonds in the Library as a full-time business.
