Always sentimental in nature, whether worn as a pendant or brooch, it was traditionally placed close to the heart. Within rested a variety of mementos or keepsakes, curls of hair, or photographs and, depending upon the locket style, closed for personal viewing or open for the contents to be shared with the world.
This period example was rock crystal that was carved and polished smooth. Cool to the touch, oval, and convex in shape, and puffy in its depth, the quartz halves have been set within narrow bezels of pale rose gold of 14k.
Hinged to allow for ease of opening, the clear quartz crystal displays its inherent characteristic of slight magnification.
