A large fob seal overall, its 9k rose gold rococo designs include an urn-shaped mid-section, arching rippled designs for the area atop the base, and a braided gold border.
Generous in size and amber in hue, a natural citrine is faceted at the edges and at its center, an intaglio has been carved into the gemstone. The image is of a dog standing in the rushes or grass. Likely a setter, pointer, or hound, he is facing right with his leg in point position. His fur is carved in detail imparting a life-like realism.
The seal is heavy rose gold over the base of pitch or similar material. All Georgian and Victorian seals were utilitarian; they were used to seal letters with their impressions left in hot wax. Each had to withstand the force required, so were usually made with a metal or core that could hold up to the repeated motions without deforming or breaking.
This is not merely coated in a film of gold, but has a very heavy layer of gold. Dating to the 1830s, it may have been memorial in nature with the urn motif. Dogs were frequently portrayed as the embodiment of loyalty and faithfulness.
