In the 18th century and early 19th century, most gems and diamonds in jewelry were set closed backed, foiled and another feature less commonly noted, with bulbous backs. These rounded, full shapes are one trademark of the era.
Pure paste is hand-faceted and set into cut-down, pinched silver settings. At the equivalent look of a .65 carats (if these were diamonds) for the surmount, the bottom is set to dazzle at 3.0 carats.
The backs are 9-10k gold as are the later shepherd's hook ear wires.
Surely one of the most flattering of shapes for the face is the sensuous two drop earring. So difficult to obtain those that are authentic Georgian in date, so desirable and so versatile.
