A jazzy melody for the eyes, behold this Victorian old mine cut diamond ring.
Formed in a circular cluster, or in today's terms, a halo, it is a ring that keeps on giving. Wonderful, beefy, brilliant-cut old mine and cushion-cut diamonds give their all for the performance.
A special note that lifts straight from an old oil painting or history book. In our close-up photos, you can see several black "dots" in the middle of the diamonds. These only show if you are looking exceedingly close or with magnification, but these hold significance within the history of jewelry.
Diamonds were often steadied in a black, pitch-like substance while they were being set into metal. Since old mine cuts have a flat, tiny culet or base (today's come to a perfect point), a touch of this shows through.
Often in old oil paintings, you will see what appear to be black dots at the base of diamonds. This is the reason! In fact, black dot paste was created to mimic the look of real diamonds.
Yes, these are set closed backed, in the manner typical of the Georgian and Victorian eras.
