Vintage Authentic Gypsy Roma Cuff Bracelet

It is a delight to offer this rare example of American Gypsy Roma (Rom, Romani, Romanichal) jewelry that takes the form of a cuff bracelet.

Visually impressive, weighty, and striking in presence, it was handmade and created in 14k rose gold. Motifs include the Gypsy Queen, or cameo, a good luck horseshoe framing her profile, and four appliques of six-pointed flowers or stars.

The cameo rests in high relief with hair ornaments and tiara, a lavish coiffure, a necklace, draped shoulders, and a synthetic ruby chest (original and correct for the period and type).

Hand-engraved designs add flourishes of zigzags, cross hatching. and floral and leaf patterns adorning the rich surface.

The Three Graces uses the word rare because when a Roma dies, most all personal possessions (including jewelry) are often buried with that individual.

The exception is that one and only one ring of a deceased mother is given to her eldest daughter. Additionally, it goes against Gypsy principles to sell the possessions of the deceased; although recently, in financial hardship, it is permitted to sell jewelry but only to non-Roma.

Authentic and vintage in date. It is the last one of a small collection The Three Graces’ was able to purchase back from a long term client.

THE FINE PRINT

Due to the nature of antique & vintage jewelry, many diamond and gemstone weights are calculated by measurements, not removed. Actual weights are noted in the item's description. Grading of diamonds and gemstones may vary slightly when removed.

HONESTY

Being as honest as possible about the items we represent for sale is our ultimate goal! Our pricing is industry recognized as fair and equitable with value as the byword.

Date: Circa 1940.

Measurements: Width of 1 13/16 inches at the widest and just under 13/16 inches at the back.

Weight: 69.0 grams.

Hallmarks: 14k.

Condition: Excellent, light overall wear.

Origin: American.

Note: The term Gypsy is considered pejorative, and Rom, Roma, Romani, or Romanichal are preferred. We use the term as this jewelry is most commonly known as Gypsy jewelry.

Historical notes: The word ‘Gypsy’ is simply a shortened form of the word “Egyptian” because non-Roma believed that is where this group originated. Ancestors of Romani originated in India over 1,000 years ago, migrating west to Europe around the Middle Ages.

The Rom arrived in the United States from Serbia, Russia, and Austria-Hungary beginning in the 1880's, part of the larger wave of immigration from southern and eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
